What can I freeze?

I was helping a couple of friends plan for their first Team Up freezer cooking event. They used several of my freezer recipes. They also chose a few of their own.

Team cooking is fun!!! Pick a date, pick a friend and choose which recipes your families like and get going.

Here are a few items that freeze well.

  • egg dishes
  • chili

Most food freezes well!  If you’re wondering if your favorite meal freeze…I say go for it. Try it.  Cook a double batch one night and then freeze one of the meals.  Don’t forget to label your bag or pan with baking instructions.

In summer I like to make meat marinades, pizza, stuffed hamburger in a Team.

Here is a list of food that does not freeze well.  (click here) It will help you make recipe selections for Team Up cooking.

Kids in the kitchen

Letting kids in the kitchen is critical to passing on the joy of cooking. Deep family relationship can be developed around daily meal preparations.
Some meals the kids get to help smash or peal. Other meals I set up a play station for them. Play-dough, water paints, dish duty are all activities they love. Line the counter with freezer paper and let them go to town. Clean up is a cinch.
I want to encourage moms to redeem the important moments with their children. Letting them be in the kitchen with you will probably be messy, but important. Pass on the love of cooking by letting them be with you.

Preparing meat for Teaming Up event

Preparing meat for a Teaming Up freezer cooking event

Cooking with a team lightens the load of daily meal preparations. A Team can assemble 1 -10 different recipes in one day. The key to assembling meals fast is to prepare as many ingredients as possible ahead of time.

Above I show how I cook and shred my chicken for enchiladas. The cooked ham is cut into bite size pieces for No Guilt Breakfast Strata. Usually each cook prepares her own meat the day before and brings it to the Teaming Up event.

Teaming UP to cook with kids

Statistics show that Teaming UP to cook with children will help them choose healthier foods when they are older. Health is one reason to let children help prepare a meal, but so is the emotional connection that comes from working with Mom. It’s true, when children are first learning to ‘help’ they really are no help at all, but given time and instruction they can a valuable Teaming UP partner.

Thanksgiving dinner already done?

Yes. It’s possible to have a relaxing Thanksgiving Day…even for Mom. When pies, muffins, soups and side dishes are made by you and your friends at a Teaming up cooking event you can plan to enjoy your family without having to be in the kitchen all day and night cooking and cleaning up. Here are a few ideas of Thanksgiving helpers that can make their home in the freezer until your ready to bake them in the oven.

  • Bread – cornbread, apple muffins or coffee cake
  • Soups
  • Sweet Potato Dishes
  • Pies – apple, pumpkin, or pecan
  • Even Turkey*

*My aunt made the best turkey I’ve had in a long time when she baked the turkey a few weeks ahead and then froze the turkey in its juices. When ready to serve she took it from the freezer, covered it with foil and warmed it in the oven.  The turkey seemed even more moist and delicious than if she had baked it that day.
